BENEVREKE CLOTHES MAN

Men’s traditional garments can be grouped into three main styles. One of them was the fustanella-based costume, a kilt-like garment of mid-calf length with about 300- 400 pleats all around the waist. The half-collared shirt was usually made out of traditional fabric hand woven at home, but sometimes also of shop-bought imported cambric; the xhamadan (double-breasted waistcoat), the dollama (knee-length smock) and the waistcoat.

All embroidered with gold thread or silk braids; a silken belt called shall Lahore (silken scarf), dësllëqet (gaiters) made of red fabric and decorated with black floss and gold thread, and lastly the red tongued shoes. Their head gear usually consisted of the so called fez tanuz, a red cap with a short silk tassel on top. In some cases the costume would also include a couple of additional accessories, such as the silah (leather belt) embroidered in gold thread, and two pistols, lavishly decorated with filigree, that would be stuck in it. This was what the people of Shkodra called “the national costume”.
