THE CATHOLIC WOMAN WEAR

Catholic women wore wider and looser breeches, made of a thin black fabric bought in Western markets. They wore silk chemises with very wide sleeves and a T-shaped collar decorated with handmade lace.

Over them they would wear buttoned waistcoats and waist-length cloaks, both in dark cherry colour and decorated with silk braids, either in dark blue, or dark cherry-red. They used silk scarves for belts and wore white, almost transparent head kerchiefs on their heads, as well as tongue shaped hats called sallman. These were usually made of thick silken fabric and embroidered with gold thread. The most interesting element of the costume was a sort of a stylised coat, in the form of a long cloak, that they called japanxhë. The jewelry worn by catholic women usually consisted of silver or gold plated items. Cross pendants were always a prominent feature, whatever the outfit.
